I do not often point out an individual bank’s marketing – but what is with that new logo from the ANZ? The first time I saw it I thought it had to be a joke – and then I thought about the history of some Australian bank logos and I thought it may not be. Then I saw their new ads and I knew it was not.
I am not really sure what it is – but I can think of a few things, not all of them would be suitable for publication.
If you have any suggestions feel free to add them in comments.

Talk about marketing … BNZ in New Zealand have just launched their “closed for good” campaign. Every branch will be closed for the day as staff undertake charitable deeds … great idea, but the words “closed for good” has caused a lot of confusing with people thinking their branches have permanently closed.

It’s a person with arms outstretched. And an opium poppy.

karmaisking,
Would that be with arms outstretched and begging for mercy? Personally I was thinking something a little more umm … “intimate”.

Yeah, but I try to keep this blog clean of that stuff.
It’s perhaps the most bizarre logo I’ve ever seen. First the size is different from the ANZ and therefore looks disjointed. Second, it’s blue against a blue background (some kind of eye test?). Third, the logo looks too close to the words. Fourth, the logo and the words ANZ are not integrated in any way.
If this is the best they can do on the logo, I am terrified about their abilities on liquidity management.

It’s also a rip off of the old Jardine Matheson logo. Clearly.

I’ve been looking. All I can find is the newer, slanted logo. There was an older one 10 years ago very similar to the ANZ logo, which symbolized a poppy. An old annual report would still have it.

Found a copy (thanks, irasia).
Not sure I can see the resemblance, though.

Glad to hear it – I was wondering if my eyes were going.
Good to see you have taken my advice and started a blog.

How do you hyperlink on wordpress? I’ve got around 100 links to past writings available on the internet and can’t damn well hyperlink.
I loved the ability to hyperlink on WP. It was so easy, I got carried away here in Dec 2007 (12 months before the first big hit in Sept 08):

If I wasn’t banned, I’d be having a fantastic time hyperlinking with gold right now.

You use the standard html tags. Or, in the editing interface, use the hyperlink button – select the text you want to use as a link and then click on the button with a stylised chain on it.

It is suggested here The ANZ’s new logo. Why?! that the logo looks like the Arthritis’ one. I totally agree.

Tom,
I think that is the best analysis I have seen on that.
